                                                           INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Anesthesia Technology Program at The Prince Sultan Military College of Health Sciences (PSMCHS), is designed to prepare Saudi graduate Anesthesia Technologists and Anesthesia Assistants to provide basic, essential anesthetic care to the community. They work  in accredited General Hospitals, Community Hospitals and Specialty Medical Centers under supervisory Anesthetists.

The program prepares, trains, and equips students to practice better and safer anesthesia, in order to reduce morbidity and mortality in the community, related to surgery and anesthesia. These graduates also play an important role in Critical Care.

The teaching method in the Anesthesia & Intensive Care Departments is comprised of a combination of theoretical Coursework and Practicals which are conducted with specimens and manikins, directly followed by clinical management of patients.

After graduation, the Anesthesia Technologist provides essential anesthetic care to the community, under the supervision of an Anesthetist or Anesthesiologist.

VISION

The Department of Anesthesia & Intensive Care seeks to:

Produce highly skilled Anesthesia Technologists who can provide critical care and become part of the anesthesia team in the Military Hospitals of the  Kingdom

Reduce postponements/delay of specialized surgery in the Departments of Anesthesia in Military Hospitals, due to the lack of skilled, competent staff, by the successful placement of graduates

Provide highly qualified Anesthesia Technologists to provide primary and secondary care

Introduce a new Bachelor Program, so that educational choices available to Saudi  Arabian youth can be increased

Enable successful students to make a contribution,  and achieve  greater  versatility and interests in their professional careers

MISSION

The mission of the Department of Anesthesia & Intensive Care is to:

Create a new class of skilled and competent Anesthesia Technologists who will work under supervision of an  Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist

Open up new educational opportunities, offer higher training, and increase the employability of the nation’s youth

Provide new avenues of learning and training for graduates in Anesthesiology, in order to result in more productive and versatile clinical contributors

Ensure and prepare the highest quality Anesthesia Technologists who will become valuable members of an Anesthesia team

AIMS

The Department of Anesthesia & Intensive Care’s aims are to:

Reduce postponements/delay of specialized surgery in the Departments of Anesthesia in Military Hospitals, due to the lack of skilled, competent staff, by successful placement of the graduates

Introduce a new Bachelor Program, so that educational choices available to Saudi  Arabian youth can be increased

Enable successful students to make a contribution,  and achieve  greater  versatility and interests in their professional careers.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Anesthesia Technology Program prepares graduates as anesthesia technologists for entry-level positions in any Healthcare institution.  Individuals thus trained  may pursue  careers in hospitals, community clinics, or in any  authorized health specialty setting, under the supervision of an Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist.

The Program provides the rigorous and vigorous training required for the graduate to be proficient in all aspects of preventive anesthesia and intensive care, as well as some basic emergency/life-saving procedures. The program also provides the necessary theoretical bases required for graduates to follow evidence-based best practice management of patients.

At the Prince Sultan Military College of Health Sciences, emphasis is based on the importance of helping students to achieve quality, reliabilty, and responsibilty in the discharge of their clinical duties.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the program is for all graduates  to be able, immediately after being  posted in an anesthesia department, to function under the direction and supervision of an Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist  with skill and professionalism.

Remaining objectives are to:

Promote an Anesthesia Technology Curriculum that helps build  the students’ educational and career goals in a success-oriented learning environment

Provide the students  the academic resources and clinical experiences with which to perform their professional duties, as approved in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,

Create a safe learning environment, in compliance with the standards and regulations of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Encourage the development of a life-time habit of continuous education and self-improvement

SCOPE OF PRACTICE FOR GRADUATES

Following the practices of countries with successful commensurate programs, the graduate works under the direct supervision of an Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist

Employment is usually found with a hospital Operating Suite, Intensive Care Units, a Community Hospital or Multi-speciality Hospitals.

The need for Anesthesia Technologists is great. Anesthesiology is a high risk speciality and  the need to increase the margin of safety in the practice of anesthesiology is mandatory for successful patient outcomes. This is  attainable only  with the prescence of skilled Anesthesia Technologists/Anesthesia Assistants.
